Local building stock physical damages

Local Building Stock Hazard Exposure

Josephs, HollyLead: Holly Josephs
Counselors: Ning Lin, Jie Gong

This research synthesizes data collected on damages induced by wind, storm surge, riverine flooding, and/or a combination of these factors during Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Michael, and Hurricane Ida. The combination of these data provides a unique opportunity to link hazard exposure with the physical vulnerabilities of residential structures across varying damage mechanisms and structure types. The researchers aim to improve current catastrophic models tailored to the MACH study region, with specific attention to identifying the isolated and combined factors contributing to the damage states of residential homes. Catastrophic modeling plays a vital role in the prediction and estimation of costs of damages and, therefore, the potential cost of insurance premiums.
