MACH Director, Dr. Robert Kopp (Rutgers University) and MACH Senior Researcher, Michael Oppenheimer (Princeton University), are steering committee members of the newly formed U.S. Academic Alliance for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (USAA-IPCC). The USAA-IPCC is hosted by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the following institutions founded the academic alliance: Colby College, College of the Atlantic, Dickinson College, Indiana University, Princeton University, Rutgers University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of California San Diego, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Yale University. Experts at these U.S. institutions will contribute to the 2029 Seventh Assessment Report being prepared by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is “a comprehensive climate report for governmental leaders worldwide”.

A recent Rutgers Today article highlights the role of Rutgers-affiliated researchers in this effort, including Dr. Kopp, who notes that “the IPCC plays a crucial role in informing both global climate negotiations and national and local climate policy and planning around the world”.

A separate article posted by the Center for Policy Research on Energy and the Environment  (CPREE) at Princeton University highlights Dr. Oppenheimer, who stated that, “it’s critically important to assure a continuing role for US scientists in the IPCC process and the USA-IPCC effort is an effective way to do so”.
